UAE rejects PCB's proposal to host PSL

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) may reject the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and request to host the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). If this becomes true, it will be a major setback for the PCB. As they have already announced, that the second half of their popular T20 league will be held in the UAE. According to the report of PTI, the UAE Cricket Board has expressed security concerns due to the rising political tensions between India and Pakistan. The report states, that the UAE board is concerned about being seen as an ally of the PCB.

The UAE's long-standing relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plays a significant role in this stance. The report states, "The UAE has maintained a close relationship with the BCCI in recent years. They have hosted the Indian edition of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, multiple editions of the IPL and India's matches in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy." The UAE's diverse South Asian population is passionate about cricket. However, hosting a tournament like the PSL, in such a heated political situation could create tensions between communities, disrupt social harmony and increase security risks. The remaining matches of PSL 2025, including four league matches and the play-offs, were scheduled to be held in Rawalpindi, Multan and Lahore in Pakistan. But the plans were complicated by the drone attacks on military bases along the border with Pakistan by India on Thursday, one of which hit the Rawalpindi cricket stadium.
According to top intelligence sources, the attacks were in retaliation for attacks on Indian bases along the border with Pakistan. This incident has made the hosting of the PSL even more difficult. PCB Chairman and Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said in a statement, "We have always believed that sports and politics should be kept separate. The PCB, as a responsible organization, has repeatedly faced challenges and ensured the development of cricket. For us, the mental well-being of the players participating in the PSL is our top-priority. Sadly, our country's audience will not be able to enjoy these matches in Pakistani stadiums." After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, many media houses and broadcasters have decided to refrain from publishing or streaming the scorecards of the PSL matches. This situation has created a big challenge for Pakistan cricket.

The possible rejection of the UAE will force the PCB to reconsider its plans. They will now have to look for a new venue to host the remaining PSL matches. It is known that the UAE has a diverse population of South Asians, who really enjoy the cricket. Organizing a tournament like the PSL in these tense circumstances can destroy harmony and pose security risks. The possibility of creating unnecessary conflict between communities cannot be ruled out. The future of the PSL is now in doubt.
The Emirates Cricket Board has cultivated a strong relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), having previously hosted Indian Premier League matches, the UAE leg of the 2021 T20 World Cup, and various ICC events featuring India. With the ICC headquartered in Dubai and chaired by former BCCI secretary Jay Shah, the ECB is reportedly wary of jeopardising its valuable rapport with Indian cricket authorities. The PCB said early that the last eight PSL fixtures, which were previously scheduled in Rawalpindi, Multan and Lahore, will now be staged in the UAE. Schedule of matches, outlining the dates and venues, will be shared in due course, a statement said. On Thursday, the PCB called off a scheduled match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings at the Rawalpindi stadium.
