MBBS student was gang-raped outside her college campus
23-year-old second-year MBBS student of a private medical college was allegedly gang-raped outside her college campus in Durgapur on October 10, 2025, late at night. She had stepped out of the campus to buy food with a friend. The victim's mother alleged that her daughter was abandoned by her friend the moment she stepped out of the college campus, and she was dragged into a nearby forest by some men, who threatened to kill her if she screamed. The gang also snatched her mobile phone and took Rs 5,000 from her.
Upon being alerted, the local police rushed to the location and initiated an investigation. The student was admitted to a hospital for medical examination and is currently under medical supervision. According to sources, she is in stable condition but sustained injuries and is in shock after the traumatic incident.
The victim's father informed that they were notified about the incident on Friday night by her daughter's classmates and arrived at the campus on October 11 morning, after which a formal complaint was lodged. This incident occurred in Shobhapur, Durgapur, approximately 170 km from Kolkata, and the survivor is a native of Jaleswar in Odisha.
The West Bengal police have arrested three men, identified as Sheikh Riaz Uddin, Sheikh Firdaush, and Appu, in connection with the gang-rape case. Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Manjhi, expressed deep anguish over the incident, stating, "I have instructed senior officials to contact the West Bengal government and take necessary steps. All possible assistance will be provided to the victim's family on behalf of the Odisha government." He also urged West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to take "exemplary action" against those responsible.
Hospital spokesperson Sudarshana Gangulee said, "Our foremost concern is her physical and mental well-being. We are cooperating fully with the police and authorities." The Chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Women, Shovana Mohanty, announced that she will lead a team to West Bengal to investigate the alleged gang-rape and ensure the student receives proper medical care. A four-member team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) met the student at the hospital and sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) from West Bengal authorities within five days. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee described the incident as shocking, adding that her government has zero tolerance for such incidents. Students of the private medical college staged protests inside the campus, citing inaction and silence from the college authorities. The incident has also led to a political dispute, with BJP legislator Suvendu Adhikari speaking with the victim's father and promising help.
