Drama, Thrill, Desert: 'Jaisalmer Jomjomat' is Here!
Kolkata : On 20th May, the grand trailer launch of KLIKK's new web series 'Jaisalmer Jomjomat' took place. The series was directed by Ringo Banerjee and produced by Ohendrila Banerjee, under Ring a Bell Films. This series was inspired by Satyajit Ray's iconic movie Sonar Kella.
For Bengalis, Satyajit Ray stands as a symbol of nostalgia. Satyajit Ray was not only an Indian filmmaker but also a source of pride for us. He has contributed numerous iconic films to the Bengali film industry, one of which is 'Sonar Kella' (The Golden Fortress), for which he is widely known. Released in 1974, 'Sonar Kella' is an adventurous and mysterious story set in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India, featuring the iconic Jaisalmer Fort. The film's release further popularized the fort as a tourist destination among Bengalis. 'Sonar Kella' holds a special place in Bengali cinema and is beloved by many. The film introduced the iconic detective character Feluda, played by Soumitra Chatterjee, and his young assistant, Topshe, played by Siddhartha Chatterjee.
So as this iconic film, 'Sonar Kella', completes its 50th years, to celebrate it, the 'Jaisalmer Jomjomat' series was created, as a tribute to the legendary Satyajit Ray. The series features an amazing cast, including Sabyasachi Chowdhury, Meghla Dasgupta, Amrita Debnath, Devtanu, Moumita Pal, Rajdip Pal, Debasish Nath, Shahir Raj, and many others, who will be seen in this KLIKK 's upcoming series.
The plot revolves around a story of a Bengali family who travels to Jaisalmer for their vacation. Rajat Babu , a bank manager was very eager to explore the mysterious Mukul Bari and the Golden Fort, a key location from the "Sonar Kella". He was accompanied by his wife, daughter, and young son. But as the story unfolds their vacation turns into a nightmare when a packet of drugs goes missing, trapping the family in a turmoil . As the family fights for survival, one by one, secret mysteries unravel, and their love faces a difficult test.
Sabyasachi Chowdhury says, "Jaisalmer Jomjomat was vividly distinctive and an absolutely delightful experience. My character has a couple of shades in the series, the first part quite represents me, while the second part is evidently different. Shooting in Jaisalmer was tough, given the rough terrain and chilly weather, but it was all worth it.The golden fort of Jaisalmer is my all-time favourite spot for vacation. I have also travelled there before on my motorcycle, a thrilling trip from my hometown. And then, three years later, I found myself back for a 16-day shoot - what a trip! One of the highlights was filming on the rooftops of Sonar Kella at 3 am - it was exhilarating! I also had a wonderful experience working with director Ringo Banerjee, who was very supportive. Lastly, I want to tell the audience that they must watch the series as it's full of drama, mystery, and thrills. It's a fully packed series, and I hope the audience will definitely enjoy it."
Amrita Debnath says, "My character's name is Oishi, and she's a bubbly and tomboy mix-up. This series has a lot to offer, with action, drama, comedy, thriller elements, and even music and dance. I had a wonderful experience working with director Ringo Banerjee, whom I consider a thriller master and a magician – everyone knows that! He encouraged and supported me a lot from the beginning and explained each scene smoothly, making it easy to play my role. Shooting in the extreme weather was a bit difficult, but I was busy with my work, so it didn't bother me much. One particular scene was challenging for me, as it was the second-last part of the series and required a lot of emotions. With the shoot going on for many days and the harsh weather, we were all tired, but I managed to do the scene successfully. Director Ringo Banerjee appreciated my performance, saying I did it perfectly. My approach to acting is to not overthink and panic; instead, I go with the flow, which helps me deliver a different and extraordinary performance. Overall, I want to tell my audience that this is a fully packed series with everything – action, drama, comedy, and thrills. So, you must watch the series, which will be released on the Klikk OTT platform."
Ringo Banerjee says, "Since my childhood, Satyajit Ray's Sonar Kella has been the one book, story, character, location, and adventure that has stuck with me. I believe I'm not alone, as millions of Feluda fans worldwide share the same fascination. What's remarkable is that we filmed on location at the exact spots where Ray shot his iconic film, and astonishingly, everything remains unchanged. We even stayed within the Kella, and the best part was meeting the hotel owners who had hosted Ray – they graciously allowed us to reside in the same quarters during filming. The scenes were uniquely captured on mobile phones."
Meghla Dasgupta says, " It was my first time visiting Rajastan and it was an incredible experience, and I'm thrilled to have been part of this series, playing a distinctive role. Working with such talented co-actors not only enhanced my experience but also led to some beautiful friendships. Director Ringo Banerjee's guidance and support were invaluable throughout the project. Overall, it was a fantastic journey, and I'm grateful to have been a part of it."
So, after the trailer release and insightful comments from the actors, co-actors, and director, this series appears to be an extremely thrilling mystery packed with suspense, drama, action, comedy, music, and charisma. The series is set to premiere on May 26, 2025, on the Klikk streaming platform. Now, it remains to be seen how well it will meet the audience's expectations, which were piqued by the trailer. Notably, the director emphasized that viewers should approach the series as a classic thriller inspired by Sonar Kella, rather than drawing direct comparisons to the original film.
